Academic Women Leaders Symposium Duhok 2024

Under the direct supervision of the President of the University of Duhok, Dr. Dawood Sulaiman Atrushi, The Center for Gender Equality Studies at the University of Duhok, in collaboration with the American Corner Duhok, held an academic Symposium on May 9, 2024 under the title:


“Academic Women Leaders”


The Symposium took place at the University of Duhok's Conference Hall and brought together a distinguished panel of experts in the fields of women's studies and human rights, both locally and internationally and was presided by the director of the Center for Gender Equality Studies Ms. Dileen Sardar Zuhdi.

The esteemed Assistant Secretary of State for the United States, Uzra Zia, graced the event with a pre-recorded message, highlighting the pivotal role of women in academia and the challenges they face. The dialogue aimed to shed light on these challenges and foster discussions on formulating effective policies to empower women in leadership and decision-making positions. Additionally, the event honored outstanding women from the University of Duhok since its inception.

Objective of the Symposium

  1. To raise awareness regarding challenges, biases, and system- ic barriers women encounter in pursuing academic careers and leadership roles and subsequently for policy change.
  2. Finding mechanisms to strengthen the role of academic women leaders.
  3. To empower women in academia by providing opportunities for networking, mentorship, and skill development to enhance their professional growth and success.
  4. To inspire future generations of women scholars and leaders by showcasing role models, sharing success stories, and highlighting innovative approaches to addressing gender disparities in academia.
