About the Department

The department is involved principally in teaching General and Systemic pathology to Third-year Medical Students. The total number of lectures 110-115 over two courses.

The Department is also jointly supervising two PhD students, one with the college of education at our university, the other with College of Medicine- Hawler Medical University. The Department is also involved in teaching clinical pathology to 5th-year students, which is about 10 lectures in the second term General Medicine.


Our vision is to provide high academic quality that contributes to excellent patient care by providing comprehensive, high quality laboratory testing and patient-focused expert consultation as well as promoting researches of international standards.



The department of pathology is committed to excellence in delivering update knowledge and training in pathology to under and postgraduate students, as well as advancement of this knowledge through basic and clinical research.



1.      Information and Knowledge: Teach students how the normal structure and function of cells and tissues is altered by various disease processes and how does this lead to various signs and symptoms

2.      Investigations: Teach students how to use various tools, including morphology, molecular biochemical, immunological and microbiological ones to identify and differentiate between various disease processes effectively.

3.      Practice-based learning and improvement: Students must be able to demonstrate the ability to investigate and evaluate their diagnostic and consultative practices, evaluate and incorporate scientific evidence and improve their patient care practices.

4.      Inter-professional collaboration:  Encourage collaboration with other departments within the colleges of health professions and education as well as directorate of health to deliver curricula that model the team-based practices, clinicians experience in their work settings. We involve other health-based physicians in the learning process because we believe theoretical knowledge is complemented by experience and skills honed in the workplace, and provide field placements in real clinical settings, under the guidance of experienced clinical supervisors, from the earliest point in the clinical education curriculum.

5.      Leadership: Maintain the department’s status as one of the best places to provide pathology education through encouraging college, students and staff to take on leadership roles in both the professional and general communities, and to be responsive to the changing environment in education and health care.

6.      Continuous Quality Improvement: through continuous evaluation and implementation of the best practices in laboratory testing across the testing spectrum in the attached hospitals.

7.      For Postgraduates: To provide high quality teaching, training, research and practice in Pathology to postgraduates to make them competent and safe practicing pathologists with updated knowledge.


8.      Research:  To establish research programs which is crucial for leadership in laboratory medicine, education and development which meet the needs of the community and are of international quality.
