Iraqi Government Offers 5,000 Scholarship Opportunities

The Iraqi government has unveiled plans to send 5,000 students abroad to pursue master's and doctoral studies, with a significant portion destined for the United States. The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRG) has affirmed that the Kurdistan Region will be among the beneficiaries of this initiative.

The announcement comes following the declaration by the High Committee for the Development of Education in Iraq on May 15, 2023, inviting applications for 5,000 scholarships aimed at studying abroad. Last year marked the initiation of the program with 400 scholarships, and this year marks the commencement of the second phase, offering opportunities for master's and doctoral degrees across various disciplines.

During a recent delegation led by Mohammed Shia Sudani to the United States, the Iraqi-US Coordination Committee convened and jointly declared on April 15, 2024, that 3,000 out of the 5,000 students will be dispatched abroad.

Abbas Akram, spokesperson for the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, confirmed to sources on April 27, 2024, that students in the Kurdistan Region are set to benefit from the Iraqi government's scholarship program. Currently, 48 students from the region have already availed themselves of this opportunity.
