In the presence of his excellency Dr. Dawood Atrushi the President of Duhok University, the Vice President Dr. Ahmed M. Salih, Nadhim S. Jakhsi, the President of Zakho University, Dr. Afrasiab Mosa, the General Director of Health in Duhok, and Dr. Araz Abdal, the Council Chair of Kurdistan Medical Syndicate – Duhok, the Dean of Medical College of Duhok University Dr. Dildar Haji Musa a one-day Symposium “Diabetes, atherosclerosis and microvascular complications symposium. An update and workshops for new consultants and trainees” opened at 09:00 am on 3rd March 2022 by the Symposium Chair Dr. Jamal Basheer in the Conference and Culture Centre of University of Duhok.

The event is approved by Royal College of Physicians for 4 CPD points, endorsed by International Atherosclerosis Society (IAS), supported by the President of International Diabetes Federation (IDF) Professor Andrew Boulton and the President of IAS Professor Peter Libby. Both Presidents contributed with pre-recorded talks, welcomed the delegates and wished the organizers success. Further, two international experts Professor Handrean Soran from Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust and fund Professor Rayaz Malik from Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar joined the conference and delivered face-to-face talks. The expert speakers shared their knowledge and provided an update in the field of Diabetes, micro- and macro-vascular complications.

In the afternoon, the Dean of Medical College Dr. Dildr Haji Musa and Dr. Sipan Sarbast facilitated case based and MCQ training sessions in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism for postgraduate trainees and final year medical students followed by a mock exam. The afternoon session was attended by 30 trainees and students.

The college of medicine highly appreciates Dr. Jamal Basheer’s efforts who raised funding, invited speakers, organized the event in a short time with RCP approval and IAS endorsement. This is the third event approved by RCP for CPD points and endorsed by international societies organized by Dr. Basheer in Duhok.

The one-day Symposium was sponsored by 16 International medical companies, attended by more than 120 delegates from all parts of Kurdistan Federal Region of Iraq.
