Dec. 5, 2023, 11:05 p.m.

The College of Science and Geology Department are delighted to invite you to attend a One Day Workshop

Title: Shallow Subsurface Investigation Using both Seismic Refraction and GPR methods

Presenters:

Dr. Baban M. Yousef / University of Duhok

Dr. Rebwar Nasir Dara / Salahaddin University

Mr. Salah Hasan Khadeeda / University of Duhok

Organizers:

Dr. Baban M. Yousef / University of Duhok

Dr. Rebwar Nasir Dara / Salahaddin University

Date: 7 December 2023

Time: 9:00 AM

Location: Peshmerga Hall, Student Center, University of Duhok

Justification:

Seismic refraction and GPR are two distinct but complementary geophysical methods used for investigating the shallow subsurface. Seismic refraction is effective at characterizing subsurface layers and interfaces in terms of their seismic velocity, while GPR provides highresolution images of electromagnetic properties. By combining both methods, participants can gain a more comprehensive understanding of the subsurface, including its geological features, soil properties, and potential hazards.

Using multiple techniques allows for cross-validation and improved accuracy in subsurfacecharacterization. Seismic refraction provides depth estimates, while GPR offers higherresolution at shallower depths. The integration of these methods can lead to more precisesubsurface imaging.

Shallow subsurface investigations are essential for various applications, includingenvironmental site assessments, geotechnical engineering, infrastructure development, andarchaeological studies. This workshop equips participants with the knowledge and skillsneeded for these applications, as both seismic refraction and GPR are commonly used inthese fields.

Objectives:

How to investigate shallow subsurface using seismic refraction method

Ability of GPR for mapping near surface interfaces

Application of GPR in Engineering, Environment, Archaeology and Geology
