To support the youth in and outside Duhok in speaking English fearlessly and overcoming shyness, the American Corner at UOD has initiated a new round of the English Club Course for a group of youth, including students and graduates from various majors.
This course, which started on April 18th, 2024, and will last for approximately 3 months, is held at the American Corner. It includes nearly 20 youths who will receive certificates by its end. The English Club course is open and free for everyone who desires to engage. Moreover, it has been conducted multiple times for various groups of people.
Miss Dejeen Nazar, a first-year student at the College of Languages, Department of English Language, who assists the participants as their volunteer trainer during the course, stated: “Observing many people feeling shy to speak English in public due to social barriers prompted me to provide an opportunity for other youth to have a space where they can express their thoughts and engage in dialogues with their peers in English, regardless of their proficiency level.”
On his part, the American Corner Coordinator, Mr. Sharif Sabri, clarified that the most important objective for the American Corner is to make people feel more comfortable while speaking English, as practice is the key factor in learning anything. This way, they will expand their language knowledge, which can also aid them in future careers.
As mentioned, the English Club serves as a unique platform for students and graduates to express themselves in English and build new relationships with the community. This comes as a part of the American Corner’s greater mission which is enhancing the youth all over Duhok and Kurdistan via providing educational, cultural, vocational and entertaining courses and activities, supported by the U.S. Consulate General to Erbil.
