About MLS Department

The department of Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) was established in the 2012 academic year under the vision and objective of the College of Health Sciences. The department seeks to provide highly trained and professional staff to fulfill the growing needs of the Kurdistan Region population

Degree Certification

The period of study at the MLS department is four years. After completing four years of study, the student will be awarded a bachelor's degree in Health Sciences/Medical Laboratory Science

Our students will be able to work in a wide range of specialties in public and private hospitals in areas such as medical laboratories and other sectors. The graduates can also work with scientists in research centers and scientific institutes. Our department is also open for postgraduate students wishing to pursue a master’s or doctorate in the field.

Our department always seeks to enhance the development of vocabulary, modernization of subjects, upgrading of the level of theoretical and practical teaching, and provide the latest developments in books and scientific journals, and laboratory equipment

Mission & Vision of MLS

The Medical Laboratory Science Department provides a learning environment that enables medical laboratory science students to become competent laboratory professionals. Through the acquisition of theoretical knowledge and the technical skills necessary, medical laboratory science students can successfully perform testing and provide quality laboratory services. Embodied in this expertise is the ability to adapt to the changes required by medical advances, newly developed technologies, and the changing needs of health care and society.

The Medical Laboratory Science program is committed to preparing well-educated, competent medical laboratory scientists who contribute to the provision of quality healthcare

Goals of MLS:

Graduates of the MLS program will be prepared for successful careers in the Medical Laboratory or

related areas of further study by demonstrating:

  • Specific knowledge of theory underlying laboratory testing and disease correlation using analytical, interpretative, and critical thinking skills consistent with entry-level medical laboratory science practice.
  • Appropriate techniques for laboratory procedures from simple to complex including pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical interpretation including appropriate operation and maintenance of sophisticated biomedical instrumentation
  • Compliance with all laboratory regulations, confidentiality and quality assurance practices using professional and ethical behaviors when working as a member of a diverse health care team.
  • Effective written and oral communication in a variety of styles to varying audiences including teaching in health professions.
  • Basic knowledge and application of laboratory management skills and research skills.
