The Importance of Good Land Governance for the Region - A Training by UN-Habitat GLTN and the College of Spatial Planning/UoD
May 18, 2023, 1:08 p.m.

A training session was held by the UN-Habitat GLTN and the College of Spatial Planning - UoD regarding the Importance of Good Land Governance for the Region. The training will continue for 4-days and will involve lecturers, experts from directorates, and Bachelors and Masters students.

On the first day of the training (Sun. 6/11/2022), some welcoming remarks and introductory presentations were given by the dean of the College of Spatial Planning and the UN-Habitat GLTN and UN-Habitat ROAS team.

Desertification, land degradation, droughts and water scarcity are worsening because of climate change and increased population pressure. Land administration of the region is largely dysfunctional and non-transparent, which calls for innovation and the application of fit-for-purpose land administration reforms. Improving land governance and making access to land more inclusive and transparent will be crucial for sustainable development and for the realization of human rights.

The organizers of this workshop are:

  1. UN-Habitat’s Global Land Tool Network (GLTN) is an alliance of eighty international partners contributing to poverty alleviation through increased access to land and tenure security for all. GLTN develops, disseminates and implements pro-poor and gender-responsive land tools and contributes to land reform, good land governance and land management, and land sector coordination.
  2. UN-Habitat Regional Office for the Arab States (ROAS) has a mandate to provide technical cooperation and capacity building for 18 countries across the Arab region. UN-Habitat works closely together with the League of Arab States (LAS) on housing and urban development issues.
  3. College of Spatial Planning at the University of Duhok is a four-year Undergraduate B.Sc. programme in Urban and Regional Development Planning and Management, which was jointly developed by TU Dortmund University, Germany and the University of Duhok, Kurdistan/Iraq.

This training has the objective of introducing the concept of good land governance and its key components to students, lecturers and key partners of Duhok University. After the four-day event, the participants will be familiar with key approaches, tools and knowledge products related to land governance and land administration.
