Molecular Microbiology Program
Introduction
Molecular microbiology is the branch of microbiology devoted to study of the molecular basis of the physiological processes that occur in microorganisms. Molecular microbiology techniques are currently being used in the development of new genetically engineered vaccines, in bioremediation, biotechnology, food microbiology, probiotic research, antibacterial development and environmental microbiology.
The primary aim of this program is to provide the most common bacterial strains for researchers and to offer suitable conditions for the establishment of research lines. The work in molecular microbiology program involves phenotypic identification of pathogenic microorganisms followed by genotypic identification depending on DNA markers. Molecular typing approach and the detection of virulence genes were routinely done in this program. Sequencing of DNA and discovery phylogenetic relationships to trace locally distributed microorganisms created new interest for the researchers in this program.
