About the Department

The Department of Mathematics was established in 1997 as a department in the college of science in the University of Duhok. Because of shortage of teachers in secondary schools in Duhok, the college of science was temporarily suspended in 2002 and all of the staff was transferred to the newly found college of Education. The students were then admitted to the college of education to continue their study. In 2006, the college of science was reinstated as separate college from the college of education.  It is considered that mathematics is a quickly developing discipline directly or indirectly affecting many other disciplines including natural science and engineering, business, etc. It is vital that we contribute to mathematics in a way that our college and students can devote themselves to take the maximal advantage of modern science to solve a wide range of complex scientific, technological and social problems. The department continues promoting research and education programs in the core mathematics application areas. Our focus areas include Differential equations, Graph theory, Complex Analysis, Numerical Analysis, General Topology, Mathematical Statistics, Mathematical Analysis, Abstract Algebra, Operations Research and Optimization.

The Objectives

The department has a strong mission to provide high quality professional education in mathematics for students and conduct first – class research in pure and applied mathematics. Also it offers courses for students in other departments and faculties. The mission of the Department of Mathematics is to provide lifelong community access to a dynamic curriculum that emphasizes mathematical concepts, communication and applications through a commitment to sound pedagogy. In a mathematically dependent society the department will strive to anticipate and meet the evolving needs of our students, our college, our university and our community. Up to now we have graduated about 1000 Bachelor students, 20 M.Sc.  students and 5 Ph.D.  students.  The duration of the study in the Mathematics Department is four academic years and the graduates will obtain a B.Sc. Degree in Mathematics Science. Students accepted at the Mathematics Department will be awarded with a B. Sc. Degree in Mathematics Science. The Mathematics Department enrolls at the moment, around, 320 undergraduate students, 5 M.Sc. students and 5 Ph.D.  students.
