Background:

Biological and Chemical waste awareness and management training course are designed to provide lab staff, individuals and anyone who works with chemicals; with knowledge and skills on how to safely handle, store, transport, and dispose of hazardous Biological and Chemical Wastes.

The training course typically covers the following topics:

  1. Identification of hazardous biological and chemical waste: Participants are taught how to identify different types of hazardous waste and the associated risks.
  2. Biological and Chemical waste management: Participants learn about the proper handling, storing, transporting, and disposal of hazardous waste.
  3. Regulatory compliance: The course covers the legal requirements for the management of hazardous waste, including regulations from government agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
  4. Risk assessment and mitigation: Participants are taught how to assess the risks associated with hazardous waste and implement mitigation measures to reduce the risks.
  5. Emergency response: The course may include training on emergency response procedures in the event of a chemical spill or release.
  6. Identification of Chemical Security Vulnerabilities: The course will cover the weaknesses or gaps in the security systems and procedures that are in place to protect chemical facilities and the materials they store or produce.
  7. Best practices: The course may also cover best practices for managing hazardous waste, including waste reduction, reuse, and recycling.

Objectives and Learning outcomes:

Understanding the hazardous chemicals and their properties, risks and effects on human health and the environment

Identifying and assessing biohazards and implementing appropriate control measures

To be able to manage the biological and chemical wastes and the best practices for waste reduction, reuse, and recycling

Ability to develop and implement emergency response procedures for chemical spills and releases

Awareness of the importance of environmental protection and sustainability in hazardous waste management

Delivery Method:

The course covers classroom instruction, hands-on activities, and online learning modules.

Participants:

This workshop is designed for individuals who handle hazardous materials in laboratory settings, including university staff and researchers. The number is limited and it is planned to be 50 persons
