Title of Workshop: Scientific and Academic Writing

Place of the event: Meeting Hall of ECE Dept.

Justification:

This workshop will cover a wide variety of writing styles and techniques that can be used for researchers whether they are staff members or postgraduate students. The workshop will consist of three basic sessions and can be extended to a fourth one. In the first one will introduce the concept of scientific writing and what to follow and avoid while writing scientific contents. A brief comparison between the styles of writing and how to accomplish a well written article.

The second session will introduce a number of useful applications for referencing and other methods to accelerate the writing especially for postgraduate students without sacrificing the quality of the writing work done by the author/s.

The presumed final session will be an introduction to writing using LaTeX as an alternative to Microsoft Word. Although Microsoft Word is a powerful tool of writing that have been used across the globe, there are some points that can hinder the writing using word especially when multiple styles and formats need to be followed (paragraphs, flowcharts, equations, etc... within the same writing job). In that case LaTeX has made easier and more feasible methods and techniques like defining the fonts used for each section as required.

Objectives:

  1. Exploring the benefits of academic and scientific writing for the academic community.
  2. Exploring the main points to take into account while writing, depending on the type of writing (type of the document).
  3. Focusing on the aspects that can help accelerating the writing process through various applications.
  4. Exploring the LaTeX as an alternative to Microsoft Word.
