Workshop: Establishing Heritage Engineering Study Program in the College of Engineering- UOD
April 10, 2023, 10:05 a.m.

Workshop Title: Establishing Heritage Engineering Study Program in the College of Engineering- UOD, Current Potentials and Challenges

Workshop Location: College of Engineering - TBD

Duration: One day - 09-05-2023 (See schedule below)

Justification:

The role of conservation of cultural heritage in sustainability has been acknowledged, as it represents identity, functions as a tourist attraction, and is ecologically beneficial due to the lower carbon footprint of the built heritage. However, the conservation of these sites is mostly performed by foreign professionals in international organisations and universities. Local conservation efforts have been limited at best and generally unsuccessful due to the limited presence of engineers knowledgeable in heritage conservation. This workshop aims to discuss the possibility of establishing heritage engineering study programs in the College of Engineering- UOD

Objectives:

This workshop will be an opportunity to discuss the conservation of built heritage (historic buildings/structures and traditional urban pattern and form) from an inter-disciplinary approach of solving problems related to the conservation of this valuable asset.

This workshop will discuss the need for heritage engineering professionals in order to develop and apply advanced technologies, materials and methods for assessment, conservation, and sustainability of cultural heritage sites.

The project aims to discuss the content of the specific study program to produce a group of engineers with technical and professional skills related to conservation of built heritage, and also to discuss which study programs can be piloted.

The last point is to set a plan in order seeking collaboration with international staff from international universities and organizations in the study program.
