Objectives or Summary:
This study was designed to elucidate the feeding effect of hydroponic barley (HB) and concentrate diet on milk yield and composition of Hamdani ewes. Sixteen Hamdani ewes weighing 44.51 ± 2.0 kg were separated into two nearly identical groups. The first group (T1) was fed concentrate diet and the second (T2) was fed HB. Milk yield was measured from each ewe, and 50 ml of milk sample was used for analysing their composition. Results revealed that the reduction in milk yield was higher significantly (P < 0.01) in T1 comparing to T2 at day 60. Total milk yield was numerically higher in ewes fed HB (T2) compared to (T1). Furthermore, feeding HB significantly (P < 0.01) increased the mean milk fat and total solids. It can be concluded that an HB was a suitable substitute for concentrate diet to feed ewes for milk production.
