A delegation from the University of Duhok participates in a workshop on heritage gathering in the United Kingdom

From Monday, March 21, 2022, until Thursday, March 24, 2022, a delegation from the University of Duhok participated in a workshop in Brighton, the UK. The delegation was composed of the members listed below:

Dr. Rand Hammoudi, Director of International Relations

Dr. Shivan Shlaymoon Toma, Head of the Translation Department at the College of Languages

Dr. Saeedd Idris Saeed, Head of the English language department at the College of Basic Education

Dr. Juwan Muhammad Mahdi, Head of the Arabic Language Department at the College of Basic Education

Dr. Zubaida Saleh Abdel-Khaleq, a teacher in the Department of Sociology at the College of Humanities

Dr. Wafaa Sabah Khader, a teacher in the Department of Economics at the College of Administration and Economics

This workshop was organized on the occasion of the termination of the heritage gathering project which aimed at collecting the heritage of the various components in the Kurdistan region, which has been organized by the Institute of Development Studies (IDS), which belongs to the University of Sussex. Prof. Mariz Tadros, from IDS Institute, organized this workshop. The project focused on collecting the heritage of the Assyrians, Yazidis, Armenians, Shabaks, Bahais and Zoroastrians in the Kurdistan region. Each of the five professors whose names are mentioned above supervised the work of approximately 20 young people of both genders for a period of 16 months in order to complete this work.

On the first day of the workshop, Dr. Luqman and Dr. Rand delivered their speech and talked about the expectations of this visit and also talked about the role of the University of Duhok in preserving the heritage of the diverse components of the Kurdistan Region. Then the objectives of the workshop were discussed. Dr. Rand, for her part, gave a general introduction about the youth that the university works with, mentioning the results and achievements of the project. Then, Dr. Sophia from IDS, who was the project manager, spoke about the results of heritage gathered by young people. The results and evaluation of the project were also analyzed by Dr. Andrea, responsible for evaluation at IDS. The first day of the workshop was concluded with a round table discussion with the University of Duhok, facilitated by Dr. Luqman, and discussed the relationships of the components and the sustainability and continuity of the project.

On the second day of the workshop, each of the professors participating in the workshop from the University of Duhok delivered a presentation about the work, results and obstacles of the project while working with young people on this project. On the same day, the round table continued to discuss the possibility of continuing the project.

On the third day, each professor participating in the workshop presented their academic research paper that they had previously written on a topic on heritage, after it was linked to their specialty. On the same day, the evaluation of the project was discussed in the form of individual interviews conducted by Dr. Andrea with the professors.

On the fourth day, the delegation from the University of Dohuk visited Sussex University in order to participate in the graduation ceremonies and to distribute certificates to the professors participating in the project and the workshop. On the same day, both Dr. Luqman and Dr. Rand met with Prof. Melissa Leach, director of IDS. In this meeting, the possibility of continuing relations between IDS and the University of Duhok was discussed.
