The College of Medicine holds a (Large Group Teaching) Workshop

The College of Medicine, the team of phase 1 and 2 of medical curriculum, and the Department of Medical Education in the University of Duhok held a workshop entitled (Large group teaching), for the academic lecturers from the College of Medicine of the University of Duhok, and the University of Zakho, as well as to a number of Scientists, Biologists, Physicians, and Post graduates from all Medical instructors and health sectors in Duhok city, in the Peshmerga hall at the Students Center on February 2nd, in the presence of the dean of the College of Medicine, Dr. Dildar Haji Musa.

This workshop was established in two different ways of teaching, first one, and the traditional way of teaching which is to deliver all the information to the students as a leader, without interacting them into the topic and nowadays this is not acceptable. The second way called modern way of teaching or active learning which is more effective, to induce the students to participate in the learning environment. The aim of this workshop was to improve the way of teaching and to use the standards and guidelines of modern learning to teach medical students.

The Dean of the College of Medicine, Dr. Dildar Haji welcomed all the participants in the opening speech, then the workshop activates started with an example of a presentation/phase 1, by Dr. Hoshyar Azo, and an example of a presentation /phase 2, by Dr. Abdulmateen Shukri. After that, in this workshop five Lecturers presented different topics to improve the way of teaching in the College of Medicine. Dr. Abdulsalam Mohammed presented a subject called (an overview on large group teaching). From his side, Dr. Mohammed Hazem presented a topic on (The place of lectures in modern medical curriculum). Moreover, (planning for active learning in lectures) was presented by Dr. Anas Amer. Dr. Shang Mohammed presented an active presentation called (Active learning techniques), and last presentation was presented by Dr. Ary Mohammed about (How to evaluate lectures?).

Dr. Abdulsalam Mohammed, one of the presenters in this workshop, said “In the large group teaching, the lecturers talk more, therefore, these days the strategy of the presentation should be active, to involve the students in the discussion, to learn more and to stimulate further learning, the lecture must follow the master of strategy in order to be interactive and effective in large group sessions.”

At the end, an open discussion happened to receive the questions and feedbacks from participants in the workshop.
