Planning Challenges and Planning Education in Iraq Symposium

Bases on the invitation from DAAD and the Department of Spatial Planning, TU Dortmund University .
As part of the Joint Bachelor Program between both Universities.
The team of head of Spatial Planning department in Duhok University with 13 staff members
and five newly graduates accompanied by the general directors of Physical Planning,
Municipalities, and Duhok Municipality, spent a five day symposium in Germany TU- Dortmund
University .The program consisted of scientific research , CO- teaching discussions and
excursions.
Two Key notes speeches were delivered by Professor Prof. Dr. Dietwald Gruehn and Dr. Maha Malaika ,
then the participants discussed four different topics in groups:
− Current crisis and the migration problems: challenges of the reconstruction and housing.
− Urban-rural divide and regional disparities: challenges of recent spatial development.
− Infrastructure and settlement development: challenges in urban development and planning
management.
− Spatial planning in international context: how can planning education address the recent challenges of
the country?
The two day symposium 10-11 was open to the scientific community and the local and international
institutions acting in Iraq. The symposium would support especially young planners for their
contribution.
The results of the symposium will be a part of a planned joint publication.
