📋 About the College

The College of Languages – University of Duhok- was formally established in 2016 when the English department, the translation department and the Kurdish department were separated from the College of Human Sciences to form the cornerstone of the new College of Languages. However, the actual date of the establishment of its current departments goes back to earlier times. In 1994, the department of Kurdish was introduced in the college of Arts, and in the following year, the department of English Language and Literature was established, while the department of Translation was introduced in 2010.  The aim of the college is to teach English and Kurdish languages, and to graduate qualified students in the fields of translation, interpretation and teaching. The college, however, assumes as its future task expanding the spectrum of the languages it teaches to include several of the most common living international and local languages. In 2017, the college of languages started an MA TESOL program and a PhD program in applied linguistics and translation in 2020 to satisfy the increasing need to qualified teachers of English as a foreign language in the University of Duhok.   Studying languages is a gateway to understanding the diversity of the world. The mission of the Language programs in the College of Languages is to provide students with a rigorous program wherein they perfect their abilities to communicate in the languages they study, to create and sustain an intellectually challenging and diverse academic environment through excellent teaching. In today's global economy the demand for language skills continues to grow as governments, businesses and organizations build relationships that are increasingly international ; therefore, as college, we dedicate ourselves to fostering students’ progress in the four skill areas — reading, writing, listening, speaking and through a series of courses which include language, linguistics, literature, translation and pedagogy, and through extra-curricular activities, we prepare students for entrance into the global work force.

Goals and Objectives

The department strives to fulfill its mission by pursuing the following goals. Within each area, students should: Bachelor of Arts (BA) in English Language and Literature Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Kurdish Language and Literature Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Translation Master of Arts (MA) TESOL Master of Arts (MA) in Linguistics PhD program in applied linguistics and translation The MA program in Translation PhD in Kurdish language The courses offered for Bachelor of Arts candidates in English, Kurdish and Translation qualifies graduates for a variety of employment opportunities. Possible industries include, but aren't limited to, media, business, public relations, translation and communications, while others enter the fields of education and journalism. The MA programs in English language, translation and Kurdish language qualifies students for various career options. Those graduates can pursue an academic career by applying for a PhD program in Linguistics and Translation, or they can use their linguistic and analytical skills for a non-academic career in fields related to language and communication. MA holders are able to work on linguistic topics at an academic level, they learn to abstract and synthesize information, to evaluate explanations critically, and are competent in the planning and execution of research and project work. With these abilities they are qualified for positions, among others, in teaching Institutions, translation agencies, and journalism.   College of Languages has 62 employees, 21 of them are now postgraduate students.
