Introduction

The rapid visual screening (RVS) procedure has been developed to identify, inventory, and screen buildings that are potentially seismically hazardous. Once identified as potentially hazardous, such buildings should be further evaluated by a design professional experienced in seismic design to determine if, in fact, they are seismically hazardous.
The RVS procedure uses a methodology based on a sidewalk survey of a building and a Data
Collection Form, which the person conducting the survey completes, based on visual observation of the building from the exterior, and if possible, the interior. The developed android application of the Data Collection Form includes space for documenting building identification information, including its use and size, a photograph of the building, sketches, and documentation of pertinent data related to seismic performance.
Based on the data collected during the survey, a score is calculated that provides an
indication of the expected seismic performance of the building. Once the decision to conduct rapid visual screening for a community or group of buildings has been made, the screening effort can be expedited by pre-field planning, including the training of screeners, and careful overall
management of the process. Completion of the Data Collection Form in the field begins with identifying the primary structural seismic force-resisting system and structural materials of the building. Performance Scores for various building types will be obtained by the application.

Current Stage of the Project

The work has fallen several months behind schedule because of the wintery conditions in the last year as well as the routine of the getting permissions from the local authorities of the Duhok Governance. However, the work will is due to be completed in July 2020 if no other circumstances happen. Until then, the work will be carried out in phases.

Phase 1
Official letters have been submitted to the authorities in government to get permission of street survey and fortunately, more recently the permission has been obtained and we started to collect data on 10/7/2019.

Phase 2
An android application has been developed to collect data electronically and to speed up the survey progress. The electronically collection data was used because of its benefits in reducing the use and waste of the papers; hence the project aims to be being more environmentally friendly in the workplace.

Phase 3
Office of the work: Thanks to the College of Engineering - University of Duhok, they provided us with an office to support our study.

Phase 4
Office was supplied by some equipment and facilities as following:
• A full specification Laptop to perform with the highest quality and speed.
• A TV to be uses as data show and presenting monitor.
• An A3 size color Printer.
• A normal scanner and printer.
• Other office supplies (such as paper, ink, toner, pens, staplers, and more).

Phase 5
A team has been formed including six members and they are:

  • Four recently graduated civil engineers from university of Duhok to work as site inspectors (screeners).
  1. Gulistan Salah
  2. Vajeen Yousif
  3. Shahad Sabeeh
  4. Solin Masood
  • A recently graduate civil engineer from university of Duhok with abilities in GIS maps preparation. He was also nominated as team leader.
  1. Shahwaz Nabi
  • A recently graduated IT engineer from university of polytechnic of Hawler for: programming, data collection electronically, data post processing , developing android application its maintenance.
  1. Abdulmanaf Najmaddin
  • Project supervisor (Dr. Abdulhameed A. Yaseen)

Phase 6
A week of workshop has been developed to present the project objectives and train the team. They learnt how to use the android application with their smart phones, what kind of data they will collect and how they will answer to the questions. Furthermore, they learnt the necessary communication skills for conducting the street survey.

Future work
Five days of the week and Eight hours of the work per day, the data are going to be collected. Till now more than 3000 data had been collected and it is expected to finish the study within a year.
